the fiscal cliff a lot of investment houses are lowering their growth outlook. that is because the owners of small businesses, they are the drivers of the economy. they hire. right now, one out of five cut jobs in the next 12 months. one out of three is cutting capital spending. if there is no jobs we don't have consumer spending that is 70% of g.d.p., so this is really steam rolling. it is frightening. >> gregg: i was reading economists and they say household purchases, wages in salary going down, durable goods decreasing now we have manufacturing coming out on monday as well as jobs report on thursday or friday? >> yeah, the jobs report is expected to be very dismal, about 75,000 net jobs. some of that is because of sandy, but housing market is rebuilding, it's recovering. that makes people feel more wealthy. this retail season is going to be very critical. it's going to tell us a lot. stocks could go up on that. we have some tail winds but right now there is a lot of question marks. >> gregg: brenda, we'll talk about sandy and impact on the economy in the next hour. you can catch brend

to the fiscal cliff battle being waged in washington. now, late this afternoon house speaker john boehner sent a letter to the president detailing a bold counter offer to the administration's plan. the g.o.p. proposal does not include a tax increase on the so-caldwell thee but does contain $800 billion in revenue through tax reform, another $600 billion in health savings and much more. all told, the net savings amount to around 2.2 trillion dollars. the white house responded to this letter by saying that the president is, quote, willing to compromise but not on the subject of making job creators pay more in taxes. however, what our tax and spend commander-in-chief fails to understand is that putting money into the hands of you, the american people, is the single best way to spur economic growth, and it's not just people like ronald reagan who understand this principle. bill clinton famously said the era of big government is over and the end of wel welfare as we know it. why? because government is not the answer. government is the problem. there was that other iconic democrat, the one that occu

more than a month away from right now we face this fiscal cliff, maybe mitt romney, who had a lot of great ideas, and in fact, some of the pros coming out of the white house sound a lot of what mitt romney has said in the past. maybe they'll talk about that. it's interesting, yesterday the president did appear before some small business leaders and essentially this is what he's suggesting to congress: accept tax hikes right now and we will work on a bigger deal later. so let's do the tax hikes right now and do the deal later. what do you think about that? here is the president. >> families and small businesses would therefore be able to enjoy some peace of mind heading into christmas and heading into the new year. and it would give us more time then next year to work together on a comprehensive plan to bring down our deficits, streamline our tax system, to do it in a balanced way. including asking the wealthiest americans to pay a little more so that we can still invest in things like education and training and science and research. >> brian: so he is still politicking. and he is
